WILDES MEADOW

“I have founded a new Black Simmental stud using Webb Black genetics in the NSW southern highlands.

I have purchased two bulls and 10 heifers, which were either AIed or naturally joined.

I was fascinated by what Phil Webb was doing with Black Simmental cattle and wanted to be part of it.

Webb Black Simmentals has been very supportive, helping with the selection of bulls and females.

We have 150 cattle in total, including steers to fatten for the trade, Angus cows with calves and the 10 stud heifers.

We are after calving ease, muscle, weight for age and want to have the option of being able to finish calves for the vealer or feeder markets.’’

KILLARA

“I run 600 Droughtmaster and Brahman cows, producing everything from weaners straight off the cows to feeder steers and the Jap Ox market.

The market was paying 20c/kg for black-coated cattle and this convinced me to use a black bull.

I saw the Webb Black bulls at the Charleville sale and went to the stud’s field day to look at the female herd.

I liked the structural soundness, weight for age and temperament of the Black Simmental cattle.

Their mobility is also important in our country.

I bought four bulls in November followed by a further two as there was no point in doing things by half.

One of my neighbours had used a Black Simmental bull with the first calves on the ground three months ago, and he is over the moon with them.

I have also noticed a lot of Simbrah calves in the markets with a really good finish.

I’m looking for that extra yield in the calves and will probably target the weaner market.

The Webb Black bulls have handled the conditions here really well, with two 12-month old bulls going straight to work in 70 females.’’

STRATHLEIGH BLACK SIMMENTALS

“Many of our clients are reporting excellent results by using Black Simmental and Sim Angus bulls, producing calves with more muscle and weight.

Our clients mainly target the weaner, domestic supermarket or 400-500kg feedlot steer markets.

The Black Simmental calves have plenty of thickness and growth, plus hybrid vigour.

We have bought four Webb Black bulls to use as sires in our own stud. There are now calves on the ground and they are looking quite promising.

We selected the Webb Black bulls for their muscle, frame size, quiet temperament and balance of EPDs.’’

PINNAROO PASTORAL COMPANY

“The Angus-Simmental calf, like a first-cross Merino, has a bigger body-fame. It’s a larger beast with more capacity and carcass, giving a greater return on investment through cents per kilogram.

Everyone wants more bang for their buck but you must produce what the market recognizes and values.

When it comes to calving, the Angus has the calving ease and the Simmentals with their bigger frame and pelvis, complement each other.

I believe Webb Blacks are on the right track with their sire selection and breeding bulls suited to my long term goals, a great partnership with a win-win for both parties.’’

KISANDRA NATURAL BEEF

Kisandra Natural Beef is owned and run by Steve and Rebecca Marriott in Gippsland, Victoria.

They use Webb Black Simmental bulls over Angus-Friesian and Hereford-Friesian cross cows, turning off vealers at 10-12 months of age.

“The Australian Simmental is characterized by rapid weight gain – Simmental cross British or bos Indicus calves gain weight 10 to 20 per cent faster, reaching market weight younger and earlier, reducing annual stocking pressure.

The leaner, highly muscled Simmental and Simmental cross animal produces higher yields of saleable beef.

Simmental cattle are extremely docile and easy to manage. This is important in cattle management. Quieter cattle results in reduced stress during the production process.’’
